Elements of a Morning Spiritual Ritual

A Spiritual Lifestyle is Holistic

While my morning ritual is the foundation of my spiritual lifestyle, that ritual is only part of my holistic approach to a spiritual lifestyle.

Throughout the day I consider various mind, body, and spiritual approaches instrumental in creating lasting harmony not only within myself but also in how it affects those around me.

3 Spiritual Lifestyle Practices for Holistic Harmony

While meditation is the heart of my spiritual practice, I also believe that throughout the day there are abundant opportunities to practice mindfulness for greater awareness of my relationship with others, and practice mindset strategies to maintain mental awareness.

  • Meditation: There are various meditation techniques. What all of them have in common is the intention to bring attention within, to the present moment. If you are new to meditation, consider starting with a simple breath awareness meditation. Other meditations include loving-kind meditation, focused meditation, or progressive relaxation meditation. Meditation is one tool to cultivate the skill to live mindfully.
  • Mindfulness: Mindfulness tools teach you to cultivate greater awareness of your body, mind, and your connection with others with curiosity and kindness. Mindfulness can be practiced in all areas of life, including mindful eating, mindful walking, and mindful engagement or conversations with others.
  • Mindset: Mindset strategies offer a way to transcend habits and thinking patterns that keep us stuck. Generally speaking, mindset refers to the set of beliefs we have about ourselves and our potential. What mindset strategies can do is help rewire our brain to transcend the limitation of the mind which keeps us from realizing our true selves.

John Kabat-Zinn, defines mindfulness as “the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.

My Morning Sadhana (Spiritual Ritual)

Do you have a personalized morning routine?

While you may not label it as a “spiritual routine” if it supports you emotionally, more than likely your routine might be spiritual in nature.

Does your typical morning include some stretching?

Do you typically start your day by brewing some coffee or drinking some tea?

Do you pause to practice gratitude or do some breathwork to feel centered?

My personal spiritual lifestyle includes a morning Sadhana.

In Sanskrit, this intentional practice is referred to as Sadhana. The root word ‘sadh’ means‘ to arrive at a particular result’. The term ‘sadh’ and ‘ana’ together denote ‘going straight to the goal.’

Have you noticed that your morning habits really shape how your day unfolds?

My morning rituals set the tone for my day.

While it’s taken me years to really create my ideal ‘sadhana’ it’s one I have come to rely on to stay grounded.

As a busy mompreneur my morning spiritual routine helps me stay true to “my why”. The essential elements of my routine holistically support me.

Elements of my Morning Spiritual Ritual

Each morning my ritual allows me to REVITALIZE, RESET, AND RELAX my body, mind, and soul!

I have created a sacred space in my home where I have an altar, a spot to practice movement, meditation, and journaling.

My morning spiritual ritual consists of 7 essential elements that are part of my routine.

  1. Vitalize: Each morning I start my day with a warm cup of lemon water, often with a dash of ginger or turmeric. This simple practice REVITALIZES my body from the inside out.
  2. Intention Setting & Affirmations (Sankalpa): The first step to living with intent is to bring awareness to your daily life choices. Having a clear understanding of your core values and beliefs is key to living intentionally. Each morning I set my intentions for that day. I think of it like hitting the RESET button. Each morning is a fresh start to focus on your intentions followed by affirmations. I share more about the power of affirmations in my blog, “Spark your Meditation Practice with Sankalpa” or you can listen to my guided meditation, “22 Powerful Sankalpas for 2022” where I offer affirmations.
  3. Gratitude Journaling: Think of gratitude as an empowerment tool to RESET your brain. It’s not a tool to downplay the effects of adversity. However, there is a science of what is actually occurring in your brain and hormones. Each morning you have an opportunity to REFLECT on all of the things, tangible or intangible, for which you are thankful in your life. Acknowledge the people in your life that have extended a kind gesture or things that enhance your lifestyle, such as good health. growth. You’ll quickly realize there is so much to appreciate in your life.
  4. Visualization: Through visualization, you are training your brain for how you’ll perform in the reality you are co-creating with the universe. Each time you practice visualizing you RESET your subconscious mind. If you supplement this visualization activity with deep breathwork or listen to alpha waves music, in the range of eight to 13 Hz, or cycles per second to enhance the results of your visualization exercise.
  5. Movement: Do you ever feel slightly lethargic or brain fog upon waking up? Movement helps you awaken your body and mind so that you can be more present. Starting your morning with a short movement exercise, such as QiGong, helps energize you and it helps draw in your life force, chi, to REVITALIZE the tissues of your body. Additionally, somatic movements, such Satori Method REVITALIZES your cognitive brain function, which can help you improve your ability to focus during your meditation.
  6. Breathwork: Coupling breathwork with meditation can calm the mind, increase focus, and help bring attention to the present moment. By bringing attention to your breath, you gain self-awareness. Breathwork helps you RELAX into meditation, for example, inhale deeply through the nose, while tensing the whole body, hold, and then relax with a double exhalation through the mouth. Repeat this several times before transitioning into meditation.
  7. Meditation: The purpose of meditation is to gain awareness of your true self, by tuning within. What all meditation techniques have in common is the intention to bring focus to the present through stillness. If you need some help easing into meditation, you can find a variety of my short guided meditations on Insight Timer or my YouTube Channel. Practice the 3-C’s: Consistency, Curiosity, & Compassion

Small daily rituals contribute holistically to creating big shifts. These shifts can be felt physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Also, these shift helps you be in charge of your day’s schedule.

Over time you’ll discover that this practice will help you master not just your mornings, but your life.

But it’s a practice. So CONSISTENCY in showing up for yourself is part of the daily spiritual journey.

As you deepen your practice, stay open with CURIOSITY. You’ll continually discover something new about yourself the more you cultivate awareness.

Some days you might feel a bit vulnerable, especially when you really learn to sit in stillness. When those moments occur gently offer yourself COMPASSION. Maintain compassion for yourself on your spiritual journey, as each element of the rituals, is part of a daily practice. A practice that will support you your entire life.
